International news agencies discus the economic and human carnage that corona virus has and will cause. Until we have a vaccine, irrespective of age, colour, race or religion, society is at risk. Globally we are going to see untimely death and economies failure. What we are not discussing is the effect on mental well-being of our people. Discussion on what society will look like and how mental health will be treated.

The John Hopkins University have published over 3m confirmed cases globally and over 240,000 deaths. With world population at around 7.6 billion, 0.03% of the world’s population has been affected. New Zealand’s early reaction has been brilliant. We have had 1,487 cases in a population of 4.8m (0.03%), Australia, it is about the same 0.03%. So after 4 weeks of complete shut down we are statistically the same as the rest of the world. John Hopkins Link 99.9% of us are still in the cross hairs of the virus. After four weeks of isolated bubbles, over 1200 reports of mass gatherings (parties). The police clearing beaches and masks have disappeared. In two weeks time I predict the good work accomplished will have been in vain due to ignorance. News Hub article

To what extent will COVID damage economies is unknown yet, but it doesn’t take a genius long to know it will be a lot. The treasury is suggesting a worst-case scenario of a 37% drop in GDP and unemployment at 26%. We know that to date the government has spent $9.9bn in wage handouts and in the future, there will be other assistance packages. The bottom line isn’t really that important at the moment, reality is. Tourism is dead, that means motels, hotels, camp sites, attractions, restaurants and cafes. Cinemas, theaters, stadiums, concerts will be closed. Global commodity markets will be tight. WTI oil was trading at a -$37 per barrel (paying people to take it) and current oil prices are not meeting production current costs.  With no one purchasing product will there be commodity demand in the future? The construction market pre Covid was collapsing with serious cash flow related issues and you can’t build something efficiently with 1m gaps per worker. Farming and food production will become the most important industry.

Mental Health

Until a mass produced vaccine for COVID is found the spread of the virus is guaranteed. Business’s are going to struggle; credit will be tight, and unemployment will increase. Working and schooling online from home with the unemployed will be normal. Not to mention the grieving that we will not be able to do. All of which will be a recipe for an increase in population and serious mental health issues. The risk of family violence, social isolation anxieties and suicide must be on the mind of the government as this will become the true aftermath of the virus to society.

Hypnotherapy has been traced back 4000 years to Imhotep the Egyptian priest. Who used it in their sleep temples to heal both physical and mental issues. In the American civil surgeons used hypnosis. Currently something advocated by progressive medical facilities such as the Mayo clinic in the US and the Liege University hospital. In 1892 the British medical Association unanimously endorsed the therapeutic use of hypnosis. Driven by the profits of the Pharmaceutical lobbyist, inexpensive therapies are actively ignored and ridiculed. Now life has changed, and mental health issues rise, is it not time for governments and health boards to accept this type of medical discipline? Anxiety and stress relief strategies are going to be vital for the survival of society. I believe that now is the time to utilise these proven cost-effective skills in the battle society is going to face but it needs government and medical recognition?
